Our expectation has always been that Apple's share of the Enterprise - all business - would increase over time. There was potential for this to happen through new products, greater capabilities in existing products and services, and many other factors. Looking back over the past 25 years, Apple in the workplace has evolved from the narrow niche of graphics to a rightful place on any desk in the office. This shift began in 2006 as Apple moved to Intel processors and gained momentum with the release of the iPhone in 2007. Now, we have coined terms like Bring Your Own Device (BYOD, your employees bringing devices into your network) to explain how we handle your employee's devices at work.
While BYOD has been on tour for years, the real star of the show is MDM or Mobile Device Management. Of course, your employees can bring their mobile devices to work. If you choose, you can also allow them to access your business Wi-Fi. With the right system, you can alternately add a guest Wi-Fi network for greater device isolation and control. It is also true that with greater complexity and exposure comes a need for greater security.
If you are providing mobile devices to your employees, or transitioning from providing free Internet access for BYOD to the need to install apps on your employee's devices, you need a properly configured MDM solution. Gartner defines MDM as products and services that enables organizations to deploy and support corporate applications to mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, possibly for personal use — enforcing policies and maintaining the desired level of IT control across multiple platforms.
In other words, MDM allows you to control access to your data from mobile devices, regardless of who owns the mobile device. Once devices are captured in an MDM solution, they are under the control of policies that restrict access. If your privileged applications were installed on employee devices through an MDM solution, they can be removed at any time. If not, it is solely in the employee's hands.
As an member of the Apple Consultants Network, we are uniquely positioned to complete your MDM implementation. From a direct introduction to an Apple Store Expert, to procurement, account setup, device enrollment, volume purchase setup, and rollout.
